Since its opening, Ushuaïa Ibiza Beach Hotel has been regarded as one of the most technologically advanced hotels in the world thanks to its commitment to offering groundbreaking services to its discerning guests. The hotel lives up to its status as ‘The Unexpected Hotel’ through its unparalleled entertainment offering, events production and technology initiatives within the hotel itself as well as through its pioneering partnerships with global brands, including Facebook, Microsoft and PayPal.
In its first year, the hotel launched Facebook Presence allowing guests to share their Ushuaïa experience in real time using RFID bracelets and Facebook totems distributed across the hotel. During its second season, the hotel continued to break barriers with the introduction of a biometric technology that allowed guests to make purchases with the touch of their fingertips while enjoying a secure, cash-free holiday. In 2013, the two platforms combined to create a new Facebook application that allowed guests to login and post on their Facebook page via fingerprint recognition.
In 2014, in yet another first for the hotel industry, Palladium Hotel Group has collaborated with global payment system, PayPal, to develop the very latest in ‘wearable’ technology with the VIB, or ‘Very Important Bracelet’. The innovative Smart VIB bracelets allow guests to access their rooms without a key, make payments through PayPal and share their holiday experiences on social media via multiple touchscreens, as well as enjoy a highly personalised service, while ensuring that guests’ information is protected at all times.
Guests that purchase the Smart VIB or one of the VIB packages (Zen, Ballad and Clubber) can link their bracelet to a credit card and then make payments via PayPal for products and services around the hotels by simply placing the bracelets against specially-enabled readers. It is the first time that the leading global payment system has embarked on a project with ‘wearable’ technology in the hotel industry and allows customers with a PayPal account to use this exclusive service.
Elsewhere around the hotel, Ushuaїa has also collaborated with software giant, Microsoft, so that Microsoft Surface tablet computers and Xbox 360 entertainment devices feature in selected suites. Kinect, an infra-red detection system linked to Microsoft’s Xbox 360 consoles connects with other rooms, so guests can video chat with each other and start socialising; a concept that works well in Ibiza’s flagship party property. Microsoft Surface tablets with Windows 8 and Office 365, represent a new era of guest experience through technology and act as a second screen to watch Xbox 360 content, stream music and watch videos.
