The project:
The Green Star Hotel (GSH) Program is Egypt’s national green certification initiative, designed to promote sustainable tourism practices across the country’s hospitality sector. Managed by the Egyptian Hotel Association (EHA) under the patronage of the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism, the program aims to recognize and support hotels that demonstrate a commitment to environmental sustainability and social responsibility.
The GSH program provides hotels with a structured framework to improve their operational sustainability. It focuses on key areas such as energy and water conservation, waste management, and the use of eco-friendly materials. By adhering to the program’s standards, hotels can significantly reduce their environmental footprint, improve their resource efficiency, and contribute to the overall sustainability of Egypt’s tourism industry.
In addition to environmental sustainability, the GSH program also emphasizes the importance of social and community engagement. It encourages hotels to support local communities, promote cultural preservation, and ensure fair working conditions for employees. By integrating these elements into their operations, hotels become part of a larger movement towards responsible and sustainable tourism.
The GSH certification is awarded to hotels that meet the program’s criteria and successfully demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. The certification serves as a mark of excellence, allowing hotels to differentiate themselves in a competitive market and attract environmentally-conscious travelers. Hotels that achieve this certification gain credibility in the global tourism industry, aligning with international trends towards sustainable travel and eco-conscious tourism.
Through capacity-building initiatives and ongoing support from the EHA and the Ministry of Tourism, the Green Star Hotel Program continues to foster growth in sustainable tourism in Egypt, helping hotels implement best practices and achieve long-term environmental and social goals.
