Applied to:
This award celebrates the most innovative and creative concept in facilitating and improving the efficiency of operations. It recognizes a group or a brand which has included a new tool. It should provide a new approach and vision of hospitality management, such as IA, waste management, revenue management systems, and so on. The innovation should have the potential to revolutionize the hospitality industry in its operations
The project:
Accor has pioneered an innovative methodology and tool to measure Scope 3 emissions, representing indirect emissions across its vast value chain of over 5,500 hotels and 10,000 restaurants. Collaborating with Quantis, CO2 AI, and Wavestone, Accor developed a system that leverages artificial intelligence (AI) to address the complexities of carbon data collection in the hospitality sector.
This groundbreaking tool is built on physical flow data rather than expenditures, ensuring high accuracy and traceability. With 1,800 emission factors tailored to individual hotel characteristics such as region and segment, the methodology allows for precise calculations. An annual survey collects detailed information from each hotel, including data on laundry, food and beverage, employee commuting, and guest transportation. AI processes the responses, enabling footprint updates in under a minute. Even hotels that do not respond to the survey are accounted for through extrapolated data, ensuring comprehensive coverage.
The tool is more than a calculator; it’s a driver of change. It highlights best practices, supports hotels in implementing decarbonization strategies, and integrates these actions into final emissions calculations. By providing visualized carbon footprints, the tool empowers individual hotels to set reduction targets and contribute to collective sustainability goals. It also raises awareness among operational teams about the environmental impact of activities such as food waste and laundry.
Accor’s open-source approach aims to share this methodology with the broader industry, fostering collective action. The system has already achieved a 41% hotel response rate and processed emissions data in seconds, demonstrating efficiency and scalability.
This innovative system not only meets the growing demand for transparent emissions reporting from stakeholders but also positions Accor as a leader in sustainable hospitality. It underscores the company’s commitment to combating climate change and advancing industry-wide environmental responsibility.
