The project:

At LUX* South Ari Atoll, we believe in purposeful holidays. Partnering with Ron Kaufman, the New York Times bestselling author of "UPLIFTING SERVICE", we launched the unique eco-programme #CleanTheIsland #CleanTheReef.

Our initiative began with visits to local Maldivian schools, where we demonstrated to students the importance of environmental stewardship. With a team of LUX* South Ari Atoll staff volunteers, we met with school principals, showcased our underwater cleanup project, and engaged children in a one-hour trash collection activity. This was followed by a group photo and desserts, making the experience memorable.

For #CleanTheReef, a dedicated team of scuba divers traveled to the abandoned island of Ariadhoo to restore its once-thriving reef. Documented by award-winning videographer Mohammed Asif (Mondhu), this project highlights our commitment to preserving marine environments. We plan to make this an annual event, expanding our reach to more local communities and media.

Beyond these initiatives, LUX* South Ari Atoll continually strives to preserve natural beauty and ocean health. Located in a Marine Protected Area, we offer unique underwater experiences like swimming with whale sharks and manta rays, and studying local reef life. Our Marine Biology Centre supports scientific research and conservation efforts in partnership with the Whale Shark Research Programme and Olive Ridley Project.

We organize charity auctions, update ocean inhabitant databases, and offer Turtle and Whale Shark Adoption programs. Guests can name and 'adopt' newly discovered marine residents, receiving certificates and regular updates. Our coral planting workshops and Coral Frame Adoption program allow travelers to actively participate in reef restoration and receive updates on their coral's growth.

Through these efforts, LUX* South Ari Atoll not only takes action to protect the environment but also educates guests on sustainable practices, fostering a deeper connection to nature.
