The project:
The Indian Hotels Company Limited (IHCL), as South Asia's largest hospitality company, has embraced a comprehensive sustainability strategy through its "Paathya" initiative. Derived from the Sanskrit word meaning "path," Paathya encapsulates IHCL's commitment to environmental stewardship, social responsibility, and sustainable growth. This initiative integrates eco-conscious practices into every aspect of IHCL's operations and projects, aiming to minimize ecological footprints while maximizing positive community impact.
Environmental Stewardship and Sustainable Operations:IHCL’s efforts include the adoption of renewable energy, waste reduction, water conservation, and sustainable cooling solutions. Currently, 37% of its properties are powered by renewable energy, with a goal of achieving 40% by FY 2024-25. Waste management initiatives have led to the installation of waste composter facilities across 84 hotels and the reduction of 241 tons of plastic through eco-friendly replacements like wooden bathroom amenities, biodegradable garbage bags, and glass water bottles. Notably, IHCL's "Soap for Hope" program has recycled over 7,200 kg of used soap into 63,084 new soap bars, which were distributed to communities in need.
Certifications and Innovations:IHCL has earned accolades for sustainability, including 59 EarthCheck Platinum certifications, and is piloting sustainable cooling solutions in collaboration with Siemens across multiple properties. Green energy projects, glass water bottling plants, and innergized green meetings further demonstrate IHCL's innovation in minimizing environmental impacts.
Social Responsibility and Community Engagement:IHCL integrates environmental and social goals by promoting local sourcing, supporting community welfare initiatives, and offering sustainable meeting options. Its "Innergise Green Meetings" program emphasizes low-carbon practices, mindfulness activities, and contributions to environmental causes.
Through Paathya, IHCL has set a benchmark in the hospitality industry, showcasing that luxury and sustainability can coexist. Its proactive approach ensures that environmental considerations are integral to both long-term projects and day-to-day operations.
