The project:

John Roberts, Group Director of Sustainability at Minor Hotels, is a pioneer in conservation and sustainable tourism, particularly known for his work with elephants. He leads the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation (GTAEF), which he co-founded to promote the welfare of elephants and their mahouts. The foundation operates projects like free veterinary internships, the Cardamom Tented Camp in Cambodia, and the Elephant Boat Race and River Festival, raising funds for conservation efforts.

John’s innovative leadership has driven projects that bridge luxury tourism and ecology. At Anantara Golden Triangle in Thailand, he introduced Jungle Bubbles, transparent domes where guests can observe elephants in their natural habitat. His work extends to designing elephant-friendly guest experiences, such as sunrise walks and mahout lifestyle programs. Through these initiatives, he has successfully raised awareness and increased bookings, bolstering donations for GTAEF.

His sustainability efforts go beyond elephants, encompassing Green Growth 2050 certification for Minor Hotels and initiatives to reduce waste and plastic use. His hands-on approach includes mentoring veterinary interns, implementing energy-efficient systems, and overseeing resort operations.

During the COVID-19 lockdown, John reached global audiences through virtual field trips showcasing elephants, furthering his conservation message. His commitment is evident in efforts like cycling 100 km virtually to raise funds for wildlife protection in Africa.

John also mobilizes teams across Minor Hotels to adopt best sustainability practices. As a conservation advocate, he uses social media to engage audiences, promoting GTAEF’s work and inspiring action. His projects, such as the Jungle Bubbles, have garnered significant media attention and millions in PR value.

John Roberts exemplifies a balance between luxury tourism and ecological responsibility, making lasting contributions to conservation, sustainability, and community engagement. His vision and dedication continue to inspire the hospitality industry and beyond.
