The project:

In 2020, maeva initiated an ambitious project to design the first eco-friendly mobile home, recognizing that 70% of a campsite's environmental impact is tied to mobile homes. Partnering with Louisiane, a mobile home manufacturer, and supported by the French Agency of Ecological Transition, they aimed to create sustainable, healthy, and supportive accommodations. The result, HAPPY, was installed at Domaine de Kervallon in Brittany in July 2023.

The project began with a life cycle analysis (LCA) of traditional mobile homes, revealing that 78% of their environmental impact occurs during usage, with 16% from materials. To reduce these impacts, a diverse team of 16 holidaymakers, six campsite operators, a designer, and experts reassessed construction choices over two years of R&D.

HAPPY is designed to be:

  • Healthy: Using low VOC materials, untreated and recycled materials.
  • Sustainable: Insulated with recycled cardboard and cotton, and energy-efficient without air conditioning, using Canadian wells for thermal comfort.
  • Playful: Featuring activities to promote ecological awareness, including an ecological challenge abacus, a phone stowage system, and a draughts board. The kitchen is designed for family activities, with a large worktop and eco-friendly cookbooks.
  • Socially Responsible: Sourcing from local, social-solidarity suppliers, and offering free holidays to families through a charitable organization.

Throughout the summer, HAPPY was tested by holidaymakers, who provided real-time feedback on water and electricity usage, air quality, and indoor temperature. The system reduced daily consumption and received positive feedback, with 9 out of 10 recommending it.

Comparative LCA showed a significant reduction in environmental impact, ranging from -31% to -61%. This success demonstrates maeva's commitment to ecological transition and innovation in holiday accommodations.
