The winning action or program will have demonstrated a commitment to environmental sustainability through innovative initiatives, effective management practices, and measurable impact on reducing the establishment ecological footprint. This award recognizes programs or actions that have made significant contributions towards a more sustainable future.
The project:
Sheraton Lisboa’s sustainability strategy emphasizes creating circular processes, reducing food waste, and reusing organic matter to benefit the environment, community, and partners. Led by a pioneering Sustainability Manager since 2023, the hotel has implemented innovative initiatives like transforming food scraps into products such as orange biscuits and marmalade, shared with corporate clients. In 2024, Sheraton Lisboa also introduced beer brewed from bread leftovers and orange peels, in collaboration with an artisanal brewer. These efforts highlight the hotel’s commitment to innovation and sustainability.
To combat food waste, Sheraton Lisboa has invested in its own composter, capable of processing various organic materials, including fruit, vegetables, and bakery items. The resulting compost is offered to a local agricultural cooperative to enhance soil quality and support sustainable farming. Future plans include using this compost in the hotel’s rooftop garden, cultivating edible herbs and plants for a more localized and nutritious menu by 2025.
Additionally, Sheraton Lisboa is actively engaged in reforestation efforts through Tree-Nation, planting trees in 13 countries to offset over 204 tons of CO2, reflecting the diversity of its staff. This holistic approach to sustainability underlines the hotel’s dedication to reducing its ecological footprint while inspiring others in the hospitality industry to adopt eco-conscious practices.
