The project:
The Sunlife Marine Discovery Programme has grown significantly since its inception in 2020 under a coconut tree with no budget. Initially relying on an old container and coral tank, it has evolved into a comprehensive marine biology initiative. The programme now includes a fully equipped lab engaging over 10,000 participants, including guests, local communities, and students of all ages, from primary schools to university researchers.
Key achievements include restoring coral reefs faster than expected, planting over 2,000 coral fragments, and covering 3,000m² in just five years. Additionally, the programme employs three marine scientists across two coasts, ensuring a strong foundation in research and conservation efforts. Innovations like 3D coral structures and AI-driven tools provide educational and interactive experiences for children and individuals with disabilities.
Sunlife collaborates with international entities like Australian Aid and academia to secure funding and extend its impact. It aims to restore biodiversity, plant 1.3 km of reef within five years, and offset CO2 emissions through mangrove plantations at sites like Ile Aux Cerfs. The initiative also focuses on sustainability, using upcycled materials and eco-friendly designs in its operations.
The Marine Discovery Programme has strengthened its community ties by engaging over 5,000 students through national competitions and outreach. By fostering awareness of coral, mangroves, and marine ecosystems, the project promotes eco-tourism and environmental education, ensuring a lasting legacy for Mauritius' reefs and coastal heritage.
