The project:

In July 2023, Shangri-La Group launched a humanitarian initiative in response to the devastating earthquakes that struck southern Turkey in February 2023. Collaborating with Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), Shangri-La provided 300 furnished container homes to residents of Hatay, one of the hardest-hit regions. Named 'Dostluk Kenti' or "Friendship City," the site located at Mustafa Kemal University now accommodates approximately 1200 displaced residents, including healthcare and education professionals and their families.

These temporary homes, supported by donations from Shangri-La employees worldwide matched by the Group, emphasize comfort and resilience. They feature insulation, durability against harsh weather, and essential amenities like plumbing, electricity, private bathrooms, beds, chairs, and refrigerators. This effort underscores Shangri-La's commitment to community support and its Asian hospitality ethos, providing stability and relief during a challenging recovery period for Hatay residents.

The initiative was commemorated with an official opening ceremony attended by Chinese and Turkish officials, AFAD and Shangri-La executives, media representatives, and new Friendship City residents. Supported by comprehensive communication tools including press conferences, social media outreach, and a dedicated website page, Shangri-La’s humanitarian efforts have made a tangible difference in the lives of those affected by the earthquakes in Hatay.
