Costa Navarino and WWF Greece: Reducing Single-Use Plastics

Tourism businesses play a crucial role in protecting biodiversity and natural heritage. Our business model depends on these ecosystems, making their preservation vital. Recognizing the significant impact of plastic waste—20-30 million tonnes incinerated annually in Europe, emitting 50-80 million tonnes of CO2—we are committed to mitigating waste and harmful plastics to protect our environment.

Since April 2020, Costa Navarino has collaborated with WWF Greece to limit single-use plastics at our resort. In 2022, our responsible tourism team, alongside WWF Greece, conducted the first full inventory report on plastic reduction, focusing on plastics in rooms, F&B, spa waste, and other guest-related items.

Achievements and Benefits:

  • Reduced single-use plastics by 2.3 tonnes compared to our baseline year (2019), and by 5.7 tonnes excluding COVID-related plastics.
  • Analyzed over 286 types of plastics from 2019-2021, including raw materials and packaged items.
  • Achieved a 50% reduction in plastic bottles, eliminating 3,677 kg (over 216,000 bottles).
  • Reduced plastic food containers by 30%, removing 896 kg.
  • Eliminated 211,000 plastic straws, 201,000 plastic coffee cups, 141,500 plastic coffee cup covers, 52,000 takeaway boxes, 41,700 plastic stirrers, and 10,000 plastic spoons.

Through this collaboration, we continue to protect our natural habitats and demonstrate our commitment to sustainable tourism.
